Letter vs. Spirit of the Law: Discuss!

This is an issue that has both fascinated and utterly perplexed me since I first came to college. And even now, after reading this insightful post which I was hoping would put the issue to rest once and for all, I find I am still not sure what I think. I admit that in recent years I've started to lean more towards the grayscale, but MMM has a lot of good points too, and now I am back to being utterly perplexed.

And, now that husband and I are supposed to agree on things like this, I find that resolving this dilemma is a more pressing matter than ever before. Please help a sister out and share your thoughts!

  1. I think that the reason it is so hard is that depending on what you are talking about things could be grey or black and white. for example, Stephen and I don't watch r-rated movies, but we are very careful about PG13 too. we often turn off or refuse to see them. That is more the spirit of the law. Technically we are allowed to watch ose movies, but I am not comfortable with the things in it.

But..when it comes to church attendance, then I am very black and white. I think it really depends on the thing you are talking about.

  2. Amanda, I love this comment. I had honestly not thought of it that way - employing the spirit of the law to reject influences that are technically allowed. I think the fact that I had only embraced gray areas that worked in the opposite direction is probably a sign that I've been using it to justify myself. Thanks for your insight!

  3. I know this post was awhile ago, but I'm just now catching up on my blog reading. Personally, I think there is always gray. Yes, the commandments and instruction we receive is clear, but we must take into account people's background. Why someone chooses a certain way is related to so many things that we can't even imagine. What may be right for one person, may not be right for another. I know this seems hard to imagine, how could it be right to not attend church regularly for instance? Well, luckily we don't have to worry about that. When it comes to judgement day, the Lord will have complete knowledge of that person's life and why they chose a certain way. Everything will be taken into account. With that being said, I believe that a lot of things in my personal life are probably black and white, but I'm sure they different from others. OK-don't know if I'm even making sense, but that's just my musings on the subject!

  4. by the way, you have provided some interesting pillow talk for Bill and I. I think we have come to a resolution on the topic, but it is a little bit too long and complicated to post!

  5. Great and thoughtful musings, Becca! Thanks! And I'm glad to hear about the quality pillow talk. JJ and I are far from resolution on this topic, but maybe in a few years when we're wise and experienced like you two. :)
